155 organizaciones piden hoy al Rey de Bahréin la puesta en libertad de la codirectora del Centro de Derechos Humanos del Golfo, Maryam Al-Khawaja, detenida el 30 de agosto, y el respeto a los derechos humanos en Bahréin.

Estimado Rey Hamad,

Las 155 organizaciones abajo firmantes, de un total de 60 países, le escriben para condenar su decisión política de detener a la defensora de los derechos humanos y codirectora del Centro del Golfo para los Derechos Humanos, Maryam Al-Khawaja, el 30 de agosto, en el aeropuerto de Manama. Pedimos su inmediata e incondicional puesta en libertad.

Creemos que Maryam Al-Khawaja está siendo perseguida por ejercer su legítimo derecho de expresión y asociación en la defensa de las libertades fundamentales, incluida su cooperación con instituciones internacionales y su papel en un documental sobre violaciones de los derechos humanos en Bahréin. Manifestamos por ello nuestra solidaridad con Maryam Al-Khawaja y otros defensores de los derechos humanos encarcelados erróneamente por su Gobierno a causa de su trabajo y su pensamiento.

Le recordamos que el acoso, intimidación o estigmatización de un defensor de los derechos humanos, incluida su detención, juicio o encarcelamiento por causas relacionadas con su opinión, constituye una seria violación de las obligaciones internacionales del Bahréin bajo la legislación internacional.

Le recordamos igualmente que desde que empezaron las protestas prodemocráticas, en febrero de 2011, su Gobierno ha reducido deliberadamente las libertades democráticas usando una combinación de medidas legales e ilegales que incluyen persecuciones motivadas políticamente y formas brutales de reprimir manifestaciones y de silenciar a disidentes en los medios escritos y digitales. Muchos han levantado su voz contra las detenciones arbitrarias de cientos de activistas prodemocráticos que han sido sometidos a torturas en los centros de detención del país.

En el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de Naciones Unidas, durante la Revisión Periódica Universal en 2012, su Gobierno acordó proteger a los defensores de los derechos humanos y permitir que realizasen su trabajo sin acosos ni intimidaciones. El 5 de septiembre de 2014 un grupo de expertos en derechos humanos de Naciones Unidas pidió la puesta en libertad de Maryam Al-Khawaja, y le urgió a cumplir sus compromisos internacionales para poner fin a la persecución de defensores del los derechos humanos en Bahréin. Apoyamos el coraje y la fortaleza de Maryam Al-Khawaja por defender un cambio democrático.

Urgimos a su Gobierno a reconocer la legitimidad de las demandas del pueblo bahrení y poner fin a un ciclo de protestas y represión. Le pedimos que inicie un proceso de reformas democráticas y de reconciliación en Bahréin. Hay que adoptar pasos clave para conseguirlo, entre ellos la libertad de todos los defensores de los derechos humanos y presos de conciencia privados de ella, así como poner fin a la represión a defensores de los derechos humanos, periodistas y organizaciones de la sociedad civil.
